The Last Gasp is a cool death metal record in the style of, as I mentioned, Carcass. Just like Exhumed (whom were close buddies with Impaled, and occasionally featured some of the same people in the line-up), only a bit lower on tempo. Heavy grooving death metal riffs, lyrics that will make your stomach turn (just like the artwork), reviving the old school like the last ten years didn't even happen. Brutal shit.

 

But, compared to their live performance, I'm not that much blown away by The Last Gasp. And the main thing to blame is the production. It doesn't blast out of my speakers, it's just... there. And that's it. It's a bit dull with no ups (and luckily no downs either), so after a couple of tracks you lose attention, which is a pity because there are some cool riffs on this disc. I guess they just didn't have enough money to really make it worthwhile.

 

Overall the music is pretty excellent, bound to please any death metal fan. And I sure bet that these songs will blow me away in a live environment. But in a world where there are about as much death metal bands as there are sidewalk tiles, how do they plan to stand out, besides relying on their status and history. Time will tell. For now, fans of Carcass, Exhumed, The County Medical Examiners and of course old Impaled records can definitely buy this one.
